Stephen Kotkin is one of the most popular and richest Historian who was born on February 17, 1959 in United States. The first volume of his work on Stalin’s life Stalin with a 900-page biographical essay that analyzed his life from 1928, garnered a favourable review. Jennifer Siegel of The New York Times said the biography was “a riveting tale, one written with pace and aplomb. […] [T]his first volume leaves the reader longing for the story still to come”. The sequel Volume Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941 was released in late 2017.
Kotkin earned his degree from Kotkin’s University of Rochester in 1981 with an B.A. in English. He was a student of Russian as well as Soviet the history of both in the classes of Reginald E. Zelnik and Martin Malia at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his M.A. in 1983, and the Ph.D. in 1988, both in history.
Kotkin joined the faculty at Princeton University in 1989 and was the director of the Russian and Eurasian Studies Program for thirteen years (1995–2008) and is currently the co-director of the Certificate Program in History and Diplomacy (2015–present). He is the John P. Birkelund ’52 Professor in History and International Affairs at Princeton. He is also a W. Glenn Campbell and Rita Ricardo-Campbell National Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

Birkelund ’52 Professor of International Relations and History in Princeton University, where he is also the Co-Director of the Program in History and the Practice of Diplomacy and the Director of the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. He is also an Associate fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He has received a range of fellowships and awards such as his Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.
